Have you ever heard the old adage, “Laughter is the best medicine”? It seems there may be some truth to it. Researchers at University College London found that people who are more cheerful and positive often lead longer lives. A study revealed that while it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it’s also extremely important to stay mentally healthy as well. Of course, it can be difficult to be an optimist sometimes, but there are a few things you can do to try and develop a positive attitude.

Get in touch with Uptown Medical Wellness & Anti-Aging Center to learn which of our services will be most beneficial for you.

Take a Day Off

Stress is one of the biggest obstacles in our quest to be happy; it can drag you down and make you miserable and frustrated. It’s important to take a mental health day when you have the chance. According to Dr. Adam Perlman, executive director of Duke Integrative Medicine, maintaining mild to moderate stress won’t harm performance, but excessive stress can be detrimental. Stress may also result in more frowning and the raising of eyebrows, which creates wrinkles. It’s also known to cause acne in some. Take a mental health day and drive out to a beautiful location like South Padre Island to clear your head.

Exercise

According to a study by the University of Vermont, as few as 20 minutes of exercise per day can boost your mood, which can last up to 12 hours. Not only does activity create endorphins, which are chemicals that can cause feelings of euphoria, exercise creates antibodies. Antibodies help fight diseases in your body and can keep your immune system intact. With exercise, you can also maintain a healthy weight and feel better about your physical appearance. Spend 20 minutes at one of McAllen’s Hike & Bike Trails for a quick mood boost.

Go Outside

Life can be so hectic that there aren’t enough hours in the day to step outside and soak in some sun. Most people spend their daily lives in cars, offices and the place they call home, all without getting a healthy dose of sunlight. It’s important to make time for some Vitamin D. At least 15 minutes of sun a day can help inspire positivity.

In a study by the University of Rochester, researchers found that participants who spent time outdoors, or simply imagined themselves in nature, consistently experienced higher energy levels and increased feelings of happiness. Instead of logging onto Netflix as soon as you get home from work, do yourself a favor and spend a few minutes outside to take in a beautiful Valley sunset.
