South Texas winters are virtually non-existent and we’re now slowly leaving the warmth of spring and heading into scorching summer temperatures. As we dive headfirst into those hot months, it’s important to keep our skin safe and looking great. At Uptown Medical Wellness & Anti-Aging Center, we created a summer checklist that will have your skin fully prepared for those rays of sun!

Uptown Medical Wellness & Anti-Aging Center has several products that treat aging skin at the cellular level to achieve a younger and healthier looking you. Find out what we can do for you!

How Our Skin Ages

One of the first things we’ll discuss before diving into caring for skin is how it ages. There are various ways our skin can change throughout our lifetimes. The fact that there are countless types of skin adds even more to those variables. Thankfully, there are different ways to tell how our skin is changing. Some are obvious, like dark spots and wrinkles, which are both common for a majority of people. Others changes can be unique to certain individuals and can result from factors like smoking, unhealthy eating and genetics.

There are two types of skin aging:

  • Extrinsic Aging - This is caused by environmental factors such as pollution, ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure and unhealthy habits (smoking and drinking alcohol).
  • Intrinsic Aging - This is commonly more difficult to treat, as it’s a result of normal aging where genetics and hormones usually play a role.

As we go through our daily routines, the effects of extrinsic and intrinsic aging take their toll on our skin cells. While the effects provoke different results, they both contribute to the loss of elasticity. And while there’s really no avoiding natural aging, instilling healthy eating habits, using SPF lotion for your skin and avoiding excess sun exposure can help reduce those effects.

Protecting Your Skin

Exfoliating seems to be overlooked many times, but it’s the most effective way to remove dead skin. There are various ways to exfoliate, such as facials and also Glytone’s Step-Up cleansers. They help remove makeup, dirt, oil and, of course, dead skin cells. This terrific product leaves skin smooth and soft.

When it comes to looking your best for summer, the best way to get your skin glowing is by protecting it from harmful UV rays. Ultraviolet rays play a huge role in the development of sunburn and skin cancer. The Glytone Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 40 is a mineral-based lotion for all skin types. It also hydrates and provides that much-needed protection against the sun.

Don’t Forget to Care for Your Feet

Summer is sandal season for many of us. When your feet finally come out of hibernation, they might be dry and calloused. Soaking them in warm, soapy water can help soften their skin. Leave your feet in for about 15 to20 minutes to help loosen dead skin cells, and then use a file to remove whatever is left before a second soak.

Accessorize!

It’s safe to say the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays will be coming at you from all angles, especially if you’re wearing shorts or a swimsuit. Instead of one weapon against those harmful UV rays, use two! You can augment your sunscreen with clothing that will also help protect your skin. Sunglasses, umbrellas and hats are just some of the accessories you can also use.

A Beach Cover is Your Best Friend

It’s no secret that the beach is the one place where UV rays can damage your skin the most. Despite this, don’t be afraid to go out there for a beautiful tan! There are quite a few ways to enjoy the summer beach without harming your skin. Beach tents and umbrellas are great ways to enjoy the waves and keep those harmful UV rays out.

De-Stress

This one may come as a surprise for many, but stressing out can actually cause various skin problems. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, stress can cause acne breakouts and other issues. Avoid stressful situations if you can, or learn ways to manage stress. Scale back on that daunting to-do list and try to do one thing you enjoy every day. Small changes might actually have a more positive effect on your skin. We understand that some things, like work or family-related troubles, can add to your stress levels, but there are ways you can relieve it.
