DEXA Body Composition Scan

Uptown Medical Wellness & Anti-Aging Center is proud to offer the Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) body composition scan! The DEXA scan can help you meet your goals for a happier and healthier you by providing a behind-the-scenes look at how your body works and stores fat.

The DEXA scan is a quick, non-invasive procedure that assesses your body’s composition, including the strength and thickness of your muscle and bones as well as your total fat tissue. All these components are essential to your health, and knowing more about them can help further your weight loss journey.

How Does the DEXA Body Composition Scan Work?

While lying on the table, the DEXA will scan your body from above with a low x-ray. The scan will measure your soft tissue and bone density. With little to no preparation required, you’ll be done in no time!

A bone density scan can detect osteoporosis and monitor improvements during treatment. This test is used to measure bone mineral density for your most vulnerable bones, including forearms, femurs, and the lower spine (lumbar vertebrae).

After the DEXA scan, our team will explain how your body fat is distributed, along with your other scan results.

  • Resting metabolic rate — This is the total number of calories your body needs.
  • Skeletal muscle mass —  Your muscle mass controls posture, breathing, storing nutrients, and acts as a metabolic regulator.
  • Bone mineral count (BMC) — A low bone mineral count represents a low bone density.
  • Body size-to-fat ratio — Also known as a body mass index (BMI), this result gives you a rough estimate of your body composition.
  • Percentage of body fat — Having a high percentage of body fat raises your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, gallstones, cholesterol, and sleep apnea.
  • Body mass — Measures your body’s bones, muscles, and organs that aren’t fat-related.
  • Total visceral adipose tissue — A healthy level of hormonal active tissue guides normal and pathological bodily needs, but too much of it can lead to visceral obesity.

Start Here To Lose Fat & Build Muscle

When you step on a scale, it can be discouraging to see no change or a minimal difference, but it’s important to keep in mind that you may be gaining significant muscle mass as you burn fat, keeping your overall weight at around the same spot. Still, this can make actually losing weight a real challenge.

Unlike a BMI calculation, a DEXA scan can help you determine where and how much fat tissue is actually on your body, helping you target those tricky areas. Remember, reaching a low body weight isn’t the only sign of health. Shift your focus from losing pounds to shedding the fat and gaining muscle for a stronger and healthier you! Use our McAllen DEXA body fat scan throughout your fitness journey to see how far you’ve come!

The DEXA Body Fat Scan and Your Long-Term Health

The DEXA body fat scan is a great tool for weight loss, but that isn’t its only purpose. The DEXA scan can also be used to monitor health and catch early signs of bone issues, like osteoporosis. For those with risk factors for bone conditions or a family history of osteoporosis or rheumatoid arthritis, getting regular DEXA scans can help you catch problems early and help ensure better health in the long term. If you’re at higher risk of bone density issues, talk to your healthcare providers about the potential benefits of regular DEXA scans and their impact on your health plans. Health insurance may cover DEXA scans if your doctor deems them medically necessary.
